Welcome to Austin Youth Basketball (AYB). AYB is an independent non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of basketball for girls and boys in grades 3rd–8th and resides in the Austin School District. AYB places emphasis on the competition while being a feeder program for the Austin High School teams. Keep in mind equal playing time is not assured. The purpose of AYB is to teach basic fundamentals, improve player skills and promote sportsmanship while attaining a competitive and safe level of play. The AYB season runs from mid-October through mid-March. Games take place on weekends as traveling tournaments with most tournaments completed in one day and within 1.5 hours from Austin. Teams typically practice 2–3 times a week for 1–2hours per session. Practices could include weekend sessions.
AYB Competition Philosophy–goal is to have teams of 8–10 players:

Grades 3-5:
•Players will practice together for 2-3 weeks then split into two even teams
•There will be no A or B designations and no players will be cut

Grades 6–8:

  • Tryouts will be held to evaluate skills after at least 3-4 practices
•Players will be split into A & B teams based on skill level and coach recommendations
•There are only 8–10 roster spots for each team so everyone is not guaranteed a spot on the team

  • Registration fees will be refunded for players not assigned to a team
    •Attendance to practice is important
•A spot on the roster does not guarantee a set amount of playing time
•For 7th & 8th grade players are required to play Ellis basketball
•We will need parent volunteers in order to sustain an A/B team at the7th/8thgrade level. Without this there is the potential that there will not be a team and players will be cut
